Course Participation

You may only take part in our courses if:

1. You have received confirmation via CampusOffice (RUB students)
2. You have received written confirmation from a member of the Front Office (external candidate).

All courses begin in the second week of the semester.

If you are unable to attend the first lesson of your course, the Front Office must be notified by mail (, by telephone or in person. Please note that it is not sufficient to only inform the course instructor of your absence. If you are absent from the first lesson without being excused (in writing), you will be removed from the course list.

If you have an internationally recognised language certificate (e.g. IELTS) or official documentation from the ZFA ('Leistungsnachweis'), please show it to the course instructor in the first lesson. More information is available here.

Compulsory Attendance

From the winter semester 2015/16 on students must attend at least 75% of the course sessions. If your attendance is less than 75%, you will not be permitted to take the final exam or receive certification.

Why regular attendance is important:

  • Language is a means of communication. The ZFA’s courses are skills-based: one important aim (aside from listening, reading and writing practice) is training the ability to speak and interact.
  • Language is learned through its practical application. To this end, the ZFA’s courses are practically orientated and interactive.
  • Success in language acquisition comes from establishing continuity. The content of our courses is structured in such a way that each lesson builds on the last.
  • Links to real-life scenarios: Many courses make use of language projects in which situations close to real life are dealt with and which are planned over several sessions.
  • The opportunity to learn together, from each other. Language groups invariably develop their own dynamics, a fact which is crucial for the learning process.

  • If you do not have the time to participate regularly, you could of course take advantage of the services we provide in the area of Individualised Learning and Tandem.
